Depression

Depression is a medical illness that effects the hormone levels in the brain. Feeling sad for a few days can be normal but if you are feeling sad or feeling “down” for more than a couple of weeks you may need to be assessed. Feeling hopeless, helpless, and worthless are symptoms that often accompany depression. When these symptoms affect daily life and relationships you may need help getting back on track. Counselling or psychotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for depression.

Anxiety can make us feel worried or nervous at times. This normal. Anxiety can be helpful because it can motivate or warn us of danger. Anxiety disorders can cause unexpected or unhelpful anxiety that seriously impacts our lives including how we think, feel, and act. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is effective in treating the various anxiety disorders.

Trauma

Trauma results from overwhelming amounts of stress that exceeds the individual’s ability to cope or integrate the emotions involved which can lead to acute, chronic, or complex trauma. These kinds of trauma can result from a single traumatic event, a prolonged traumatic event, or exposure to multiple traumatic events. Although there is no cure, symptoms can be managed cognitive behavioural therapy has been shown to be effective in treating trauma.

Most people who seriously consider suicide do not want to die. Often individuals have underlying mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, or substance use problems. Sources of stress such as personal relationships, social status, school work or worries about the future can contribute to feelings of hopelessness and pain. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal ideations or has a plan to attempt suicide, talk to someone about your feelings. There are people who can help you to feel better about life.

Reward, pleasure, and motivation. Chronic addiction has a direct effect on these areas of the brain causing carvings, loss of control over the amount of substance used, a compulsion to use, and use of substance/activity no matter the consequence. These consequences can build up over time and have a devastating effect on health, well-being, relationships, finances, and employment. Many factors contribute to an addiction and its negative effects on life and health. The stages or cycle of addiction can occur over a short period of time or take months or years to develop. Everyone is different and contributing circumstances vary.

At CMHR, we use several evidence-based therapy approaches including cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and motivational interviewing to help individuals identify risk factors, work through the stages of change, utilize protective factors, and build resilience. Motivational therapy techniques will help identify, commit and strengthen your stage of readiness to make changes to drug or alcohol use. The use of cognitive behavioural therapy techniques can help you understand how your thoughts can trigger addictive thoughts and how to recognize and change addictive thinking. This will help to build resilience for relapse prevention.

Everyone experiences stress in one form or another in their lives. Stress can occur when there are too many pressures to deal with such as raising a child, school work, financial issues, problems at work, looking after an ill family member, etc. Burn out occurs from a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. Your brain and body can only handle feeling overworked and overwhelmed for so long. Counselling can offer guidance by helping you identify causes, explore possible coping strategies, and navigate any life challenges contributing to burnout.

Grief

We can guide you through the difficult stages of grief, and the entire mourning experience that occurs with peronal loss, helping you to accept the absence of your loved one, and discovering the transformation that occurs as a result of loss.
